Fitness Goal 2011: Down to Business

Enough bout food and other such nonsense, it’s time to put some K’s on the clock!

A 24 minute 5K? Oh dear, who’s idea was this again? Lets take a look at the 1Km split times.

Split
Time
Distance
Avg Pace
Summary 00:24:02 5,00 04:48
1 00:04:00 1,00 04:00
2 00:04:35 1,00 04:35
3 00:04:36 1,00 04:36
4 00:05:33 1,00 05:33
5 00:05:15 1,00 05:15

To do a half marathon in under 1h30mins you need to run each Km in 4m18secs. I managed to do that on my first Km and that was it.

Given the tiredness in my muscles after just a few minutes and the fact that I was peching like an auld horse half way through (and cramped up on the walk back to the flat). Its pretty clear that I ran the first part in anaerobic mode.

Anaerobic is the kind of running you do when your running after a bus. Your body tries to use energy from fat and muscles instead of the more steady aerobic way generally used by long distance runners. Anaerobic lets you go fast, but you will hit a wall sooner or later and fall over.

So, either I increase my ability to run anaerobically from 1Km to 21Km or I find a way to run aerobically at higher speeds. (My comfortable aerobic speed at the moment seems to be around 5:30 per Km.)

This is going to be tough!
