Facebook

Today, Microsoft paid $240million for a 1.6% share of Facebook, the internet sensation that has completely passed me by. Why would anybody want to put their life online? Surely that is only for people with a heightened sense of self importance or a chronic case of “look at me” syndrome. Next these people will buying their own domain names and hosting inane blogs.

That price values this latest flavour of the month website at $15billion. Thats more than the stockmarket value of companies like AT&T, TeliaSonera, Gap, Yahoo or Sun Microsystems. In fact, it would place it in the top 100 companies in the world. Lets see who is still going the strongest in 10 years time, Facebook or Heineken (market cap of 14bn).

Theres been a lot of comments as to why Microsoft would pay so much, most of it centered around a battle of ego’s with Google, but my favourite was this…

Facebook is the acceptable face of blogging – you can reflect your life and personality online without being seen as a “blogger”, which often carries a geeky stigma.
